Mercenaries are easy to underestimate in Hero Siege. A good mercenary is more than extra damage on the screen. The right companion can cover weaknesses in your build, improve clear speed, provide useful utility, and eventually become an important part of a Magic Find setup.
With three main choices to consider — Knight, Archer, and Magister — the best option depends heavily on what your character needs. Your skill investment and seven equipment slots also become increasingly important once you reach the endgame.
Knight: The Best Frontline Partner
The Knight is the most natural choice for characters that need additional frontline support. Its ability to stay close to enemies makes it useful for builds that deal damage from a safer position.
This makes Knight particularly effective for fragile ranged characters and casters. While the mercenary takes attention from enemies, your main character can focus on clearing packs without constantly being interrupted.
When spending skill points, prioritize abilities that improve survivability and consistent damage rather than trying to turn the Knight into a second main character. A dead mercenary provides no benefit, so durability should remain an important consideration.
Knight is also a good option when your character already has strong area damage but struggles against enemies that reach melee range.
Archer: Damage and Consistent Ranged Pressure
Archer is a better fit for players who want another source of ranged damage. It can attack from a distance while your character moves through the map, making it particularly comfortable for fast farming builds.
The main advantage is positioning. Archer does not need to stand directly inside dangerous packs, allowing it to remain useful while you focus on movement and clearing.
For farming-focused characters, Archer can be especially attractive because the companion can continue attacking while you reposition or collect loot. If you are already investing in Hero Siege Gold, it makes sense to build the mercenary around the same farming objective rather than spending resources on stats that do not improve your overall efficiency.
Magister: Utility for Difficult Content
Magister is the more specialized choice. Instead of simply adding another physical damage dealer, the class can provide valuable magical pressure and utility.
This makes Magister interesting for characters that already have enough frontline presence but want additional ranged or elemental support. It can also be a useful choice when your main build has a specific weakness that the other mercenaries cannot easily cover.
The important thing is to choose the mercenary based on your actual character. There is no reason to use Magister simply because it looks stronger on paper if Knight or Archer provides more useful support for your playstyle.
Understanding the Seven Equipment Slots
Mercenaries have seven equipment slots, and filling all of them with random upgrades is not an efficient endgame strategy.
The first priority should be keeping the mercenary alive. Defensive stats and useful resistances can be more valuable than a small increase in damage, especially in high-level content.
After survivability is established, focus on the following priorities:
- Weapon damage and useful offensive stats
- Attack or casting speed where appropriate
- Critical-related stats for damage-focused mercenaries
- Resistances and defensive stats
- Movement speed when it improves positioning
- Magic Find for dedicated farming setups
The exact balance depends on the mercenary. Knight benefits more from defensive investment, while Archer and Magister can place greater emphasis on offensive stats.
Building a Magic Find Mercenary
Once your character is comfortably farming endgame content, the mercenary becomes another opportunity to increase Magic Find.
A dedicated MF mercenary does not necessarily need to maximize damage. The goal is to keep the companion alive while stacking useful Magic Find across available equipment.
This is where spare Hero Siege Items can become valuable. Equipment that is no longer strong enough for your main character may still be useful on a mercenary if it provides Magic Find alongside acceptable defensive stats.
However, do not sacrifice too much survivability just to increase MF. A mercenary that constantly dies loses both its combat contribution and the practical value of its gear.
Best Mercenary for Endgame Farming
For general farming, Archer is an excellent choice when your build already has enough defensive power. Its ranged damage complements fast-clearing characters without creating additional positioning problems.
Knight is the safer option for fragile builds and characters that need a reliable frontline.
Magister works best for players who want specialized magical support or are building around a setup that benefits from additional utility.
For pure Magic Find farming, the mercenary should ultimately be treated as part of the complete farming setup rather than an independent damage dealer. Give it enough defense to survive, then use the remaining equipment slots for Magic Find and useful secondary stats.
The best mercenary setup is therefore not necessarily the one with the highest damage. It is the one that improves your character’s weaknesses while remaining useful throughout an entire farming session. Once your main build is established, optimizing those seven equipment slots can turn a basic companion into a surprisingly valuable part of your Season 10 endgame setup.
